Love. Connect. Serve.
Where I work, this is the slogan we hang our hats on. It’s simple, it encompases everything and NOW, it would seem it stands the test of time even during pandemics. How do we live this out six months into covid or anytime for that matter? I’m sure there are many and even better answers than what I can put forth, but I present you with those that dance in my mind and wake up my heart.
Love. Love God by opening your bible every day and pray; A LOT. EVERY DAY! I normally do the annual bible reading plan that my church puts out which you can find here. However, this year, I’m actually reading a kindle version of a chronological bible that I find fascinating. Even if you haven’t cracked your bible open once this year, start now. If you skip a day, big deal. You don’t have to read all you missed just start again. Don’t over complicate it. One thing I do before reading each night before bed is pray, “Lord, put this in my heart and my mind, in Jesus’ name, amen.”
Now, for that prayer. I’ve struggled with this one. I spent most of my year praying for a friend’s baby, requests I’d be sent along the way and the success of my books. I noticed I wasn’t devoting as much time to praying for my kids, my sanity or my church as a whole. That changes today. I have written out a personal weekly plan that encompasses ideas I took from these images.
When you are in the word of God and praying to the King of Kings, love for Him and others is the inevitable outcome. It’s simple math – what goes in is what comes out.
Connect. How are you connecting in a disconnected world? I’ve rather loved this challenge. I’ve sent mail to whoever God placed on my heart- a simple card with my favorite tea bag in it, a pair of socks with a note that says “this pandemic makes me wanna sock someone and I chose you”, laminated bible verses for people to memorize. I’ve also done phone calls and I HATE talking on the phone. I make sure to smile from six feet away whenever the opportunity arises. I connect and…
I read. I read social media posts and leave authentic comments to create conversation and connection. I read books to take in the ideas of others. Reading gives you a peek into another’s world.
When attending online church, I make sure to comment on the worship and sermon or interact with others attending. Just because it’s online, doesn’t mean you can’t say hello and welcome to someone else you notice jumping on!
Lastly, I meet with others in safe ways when it’s safe to do so and keep the conversation fun and holy. I ask LOTS of questions – learning about others is connecting with them.
Serve. We can serve at our local church. It may not be ushering and nursery duty, but if you ask someone on staff, there’s a way to serve. AND, if your staff is still at a place where they can’t give you a concrete way to serve, first pray for their wisdom and sanity in ministry (COVID season is tough), then find that way to serve yourself. You could watch a neighbor’s kids, deliver groceries to those without cars for the food bank, pick up trash along the side of the road during your daily walk. You’re only limited by your lack of imagination.
Love. Connect. Serve. How are you doing it? I wanna know!
